Before Your Trip: Essential Car Hire Requirements
Prepare your licence, ID, payment card, vehicle choice, total-cost checks, protection details and pickup inspection before travelling.
Preparing for car hire involves more than choosing dates and reserving a vehicle. Collection can fail if the driving licence, driver age, payment method or selected vehicle group does not meet the supplier’s conditions. Treat three things separately: your legal right to drive in Türkiye, the rental company’s rules for that vehicle group, and the commercial terms shown in your own booking.
Legal driving rules and rental requirements are different
A valid licence that allows you to drive in Türkiye does not automatically qualify you for every rental category. A comparison of several international rental companies’ Türkiye terms shows that minimum age and licence-holding periods vary both by supplier and vehicle group. Do not rely on one age quoted in a general article. Read the current rental terms for your booking and confirm the group-specific requirement in writing.
Official Turkish information says foreign visitors may use a foreign driving licence for up to six months after entry; a Turkish licence is required for a longer stay. A rental supplier may also request an International Driving Permit or translation when the original licence is not in the Latin alphabet. Confirm the requirement for the issuing country and alphabet before departure, rather than assuming the legal six-month period answers the supplier’s document question.
Documents and payment items to pack
A phone photograph does not necessarily replace an original document. Prepare the main driver and every additional driver separately:
- a valid physical driving licence;
- passport or accepted identity document;
- proof of entry date when requested for a foreign licence;
- an IDP or translation if required for the licence;
- the reservation confirmation and a working telephone number;
- where the terms require it, an accepted payment card in the main driver’s name with sufficient available limit for the hold.
Card type, name matching and the pre-authorisation amount differ between companies and vehicle groups. Do not assume that prepaying the rental removes the need to show a card at collection. Check the accepted card, deposit/hold and estimated bank-release process in the booking confirmation.

Set realistic pickup and return times
Rental days are commonly measured in 24-hour periods, so a late return can affect the charge. For a flight arrival, allow time for passport control and baggage collection instead of using the scheduled landing time as the pickup time. Share the correct flight number, terminal and working mobile number. Keep the meeting instructions for the Antalya Airport pickup location and report a delay as early as possible.
Match the vehicle group to people and luggage
Most standard reservations confirm a group rather than one exact make and model. When comparing available vehicles, include case dimensions, a child seat or pushchair, passenger comfort and automatic/manual transmission. Ask about usable boot space with every seat occupied. A vehicle that is too large may add cost and parking difficulty; one that is too small may encourage unsafe luggage placement.
Read the total price and protection terms
The daily rate is not the complete comparison. Taxes, mileage, fuel policy, additional drivers, child seats, airport or hotel delivery and a different return point can change the total. If the trip ends elsewhere, obtain written approval and check possible charges for a different-location return.
A deposit or card hold is not the same as the excess that may apply after damage. Review the protection packages for exclusions involving tyres, glass, lights, keys, misfuelling, the underside or interior, and read the incident-reporting procedure. Personal travel or credit-card cover does not remove the need to follow the rental company’s reporting rules.
Inspect the car before leaving
Compare the driver name, dates, vehicle group, return location, mileage and fuel on the agreement. Inspect bodywork, glass, wheels, tyres and the cabin in good light. Make sure existing marks appear on the handover record, then photograph all sides, the mileage and fuel gauge. Test a child seat, boot, lights and essential controls before moving. The pickup and return process sets out the main sequence.

Final questions before you drive
- Which assistance number should be used after a breakdown or incident?
- Which report and documents are required after damage?
- What fuel type and return level apply?
- Is there a mileage limit and how is excess use charged?
- How are tolls, parking and traffic penalties processed?
- Who must approve a change of return time or place?
Frequently asked questions
Does a confirmed booking guarantee handover?
It confirms the reservation, but collection still requires the driver, documents and payment method to meet the applicable conditions. A prepaid booking may still be refused if a collection requirement is missing.
Is a photo of my licence enough?
Usually not. Bring the valid physical document unless the supplier has explicitly confirmed another accepted format in writing.
Can I add another driver?
The additional driver must present the required documents and meet the same group conditions. They should not drive until recorded on the agreement; check the process and fee in advance.
Once your documents, route and pickup plan are clear, contact Time Rent A Car to confirm the current requirements for the selected vehicle group in writing.
